As the clock moved towards midnight, Dwarka seemed to pause for the divine arrival of Lord Krishna. Temple bells rang, conch shells echoed through the night and devotional chants filled the air as the sub-city celebrated Janmashtami with faith, colour and unrestrained enthusiasm. From beautifully illuminated temples to vibrant celebrations in housing societies, the festival brought residents together in a spirit of devotion and joy. Elaborate decorations, floral arrangements, bhajans, kirtans and Krishna-themed tableaux added to the festive atmosphere across Dwarka. Major temples, including ISKCON Dwarka in Sector 13 and Radha Krishna Mandir in Sector 9, witnessed a steady flow of devotees. The premises were decorated with flowers and lights, while special prayers and devotional programmes continued throughout the day.
The significance of Janmashtami lies in commemorating the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, believed to have been born over 5,000 years ago in Mathura to restore dharma and vanquish evil. For devotees, the day symbolised the triumph of righteousness over injustice and the eternal values of love, compassion and wisdom that Krishna’s life represents.
Jhankis depicting various episodes from Krishna’s childhood became a major attraction. Scenes portraying little Krishna’s playful butter thefts, his encounter with Kaliya and the lifting of Govardhan hill drew devotees, particularly children.
For devotees, Janmashtami is not merely a festival marking the birth of Krishna but a reminder of the eternal battle between good and evil. Krishna’s teachings of truth, righteousness, compassion and duty continue to hold relevance, residents said.
Housing societies and community spaces witnessed colourful Krishna-themed displays prepared by children. Using paper, clay, fabric, flowers and handmade props, young participants recreated scenes from Krishna’s birth and childhood.
Parents helped with the preparations, but the children took centre stage with their imagination and enthusiasm.
“These activities make mythology come alive for children. They learn about Krishna not just through books but by creating and portraying these stories themselves,” said Ritu Malhotra, a Sector 11 resident.
The most awaited moment came at midnight, traditionally believed to be the time of Krishna’s birth. As the hour approached, devotees gathered for special prayers and abhishek ceremonies.
The idols were ceremonially bathed with milk, curd, honey, ghee and holy water, followed by the ringing of bells and blowing of conch shells. The atmosphere reached a spiritual high as devotees chanted devotional prayers.
“Janmashtami gives us an opportunity to look beyond the celebrations and remember Krishna’s message of standing for what is right. That is the real meaning of the festival,” said Rajesh Mehra, a Sector 7 resident.
The festive spirit extended beyond temple rituals. Cultural programmes, bhajan sessions, fancy-dress competitions and Dahi Handi events kept residents engaged.
Children dressed as Krishna and Radha became the centre of attraction at several society celebrations. Their colourful costumes, traditional jewellery and innocent performances added a special charm to the festivities.
For many devotees, the day began with a fast that continued until the midnight prayers. Families gathered at home for puja before breaking their fast and sharing prasad.
“Fasting makes the entire day feel like a spiritual preparation for the midnight celebration. When the puja finally takes place, the joy is completely different,” said Anita Kapoor of Sector 4.
Markets in Sectors 6 and 10 also witnessed increased activity ahead of the festival, with residents purchasing puja items, decorative items, sweets and flowers. Special prasad, including the traditional makhan-mishri, was distributed during several celebrations.
As the celebrations continued late into the night, chants of “Hare Krishna, Hare Rama” reverberated across the sub-city. For Dwarka’s residents, Janmashtami once again became a celebration that blended devotion with community spirit while keeping age-old traditions alive for the next generation.
